We are trying to keep things chemical-free and clean for our baby. This has worked great. It also got approved by my wife which is a 5-star level to begin with. We have purchased over 5-6 of these.

I have a 7 Week old baby. She was premature and never vomitted. the end of week 5, beginning of week 6, She started to fountain/projectile vomit. I mean it was everywhere. I dealt with it for 3 days and immediately went to the doctor. She just hit 6 pounds and I did not want her to lose weight. She can’t afford it. Well the nurse practitioner immediately prescribed Nexium and said she had reflux. I agree with her diagnosis, I just wasn’t a fan of the reviews and studies that were done of the medicine. Most were done 10 years ago. But the concept of trying to inhibit a reaction in her stomach just didn’t sit well with me, her body is still trying to figure out how to work; why stop nature and screw her body up for the future? I didn’t want to take the chance. Not only was she projectile vomiting she was fussy and screaming every time she ate. Of course after seeing the doctor the pharmacy didn’t have it so I dealt with a fussy reflux baby for a week before even getting the meds meanwhile trying to find alternatives. I was already feeding her upright, burping her all the time. I couldn’t lay her down at all at any point of the day or night cause she would vomit. Even if it was 3 hours after her last feed. She was vomiting 1/3 to 1/2 of her milk. (I was crazy enough to measure.) She was in obvious pain and discomfort. The meds didn’t do anything but constipate her immediately and she was still vomitting (granted I didn’t use it long enough to get it to start working approx 2 weeks) I don’t know how I found this product, reddit i think but I was desperate a week and a half of this will make you try anything. I also began feeding her probiotics to see if it will help. The first feed mixing this with her bottle. GAME CHANGING. She didn’t vomit. She wasn’t crying. I can lay her down normally again without vomiting. No more arching of the back uncomfortable during feeds. I had my happy relaxed baby again. She drinks 4 oz, so I mix one spoonful of this in my breastmilk after warming it. She still spits up but its a small amount. Now a lot of reviews said it made their babies gassy and loose stools. I mentioned I started this in tandem of a probiotic so I don’t know if that’s what’s helping my daughter but she isn’t gassy and her bowel movements are fine. There is no taste, I mixed it with a drink of mine, and the consistency is perfect for my daughter its just thick enough that you can barely tell it’s thickened (descriptive but its the best that I can do.) Give this a chance for your baby. My daughter also doesn’t have a rash like others in the reviews.

Our baby was diagnosed with a swallowing difficulty and she aspirated on her food. After a swallow study, our specialist told us we needed to thicken her food. Since this is the only product recommended for babies under 12 months old this is what we use.
Pros: it helps her swallow and gain weight! She also never spits up.
Cons: it is a learning curve to use. It took about a month to smooth out all the bumps and figure out how to make it work for our lifestyle. We just make the water hotter than they recommend and use more to make it the right thickness. We also have to wait much longer than the instructed 15 mins to thicken appropriately.
In nutshell it saved our baby but is hard to use!

We switched to Gelmix for our son’s Elecare formula around 9 weeks old. He has severe laryngomalacia with dysphagia. Since his 2 supraglottoplasty surgeries he now aspirates on thin liquids. We tried rice cereal. That was just a horrible mess and so bad for baby’s intestines beyond the arsenic issues! So we turned to Gelmix. He is on nectar thick, but believe he now needs even thicker. Gelmix is much more reliable and consistent than rice cereal. We fill up our electric kettle with a quart or more of filtered water, boil, let cool from boiling, but still hot – around 100 degrees or so, fill 4 8 ounce bottles with water, add 5 scoops of Gelmix to each bottle and shake until dissolved, and let cool completely to room temperature before using it. This is enough for a 24 hour period for our 4 month old. Some of this is used to thicken his medicines as well. We leave it on the counter until we need to use it. Our son takes 6 ounce bottles right now, so we just pour off the 2 ounces in an empty bottle to accumulate and use throughout the 24hr period. We add the powder formula and shake…and shake…and shake. It does take a lot of shaking to dissolve the formula in the thicker water (I’m buying a formula blender now though). You can also use a baby spoon to pressed out stubborn clumps as well. While we do love the Gelmix, unfortunately the price is on the high side. But they do have a program on their site to help with cost. The only other downside I have for this is, we are currently seeing if the gelmix is causing the excessive mucus in his bowels. He could be having a reaction, but we aren’t 100% sure if it’s Gelmix or not. So we are searching for alternatives to see if the Gelmix is the culprit or if his dairy/soy intolerance is still the issue. Overall I’d recommend Gelmix to any parent who needs to thicken their baby’s food sources over cereals, oatmeal or other thickeners. Although expensive, Gelmix is probably the best thickener on the market right now for babies under 1 year old – my personal opinion after doing a lot of research and reading about how bad the rice cereal is for their gut, especially babies under 6 months and the long term effects of rice cereal.

We have to thicken our baby’s formula and we were told to use oat or rice cereal. Well, I didn’t like the idea of all the additional calories when my baby is so young so I found out about Gelmix and tried it. Works so well for our purpose. I am upset that the container is like half full though. I don’t think that’s fair at all, but I’m not complaining too much since I rely on this product a lot

It sure thickens the milk and helps baby to feed milk well but can cause a lot of gas and unable to poop issues in infants. Also, the milk would not thicken well as recommended in their instructions. Have to heat up breat milk little high and after mixing it, have to wait for more time for milk to thicken. Also, the milk would be loose initially leaving the mix at bottom and would thicken hard if left for sometime. This product is not consistent as per their instructions.
